iTunes, CBC Radio 3 and Matthew's solo album
Both of our albums are now available on iTunes! You can search for us, or follow these links for Love What You're Left With and You Gave Up The Ghost. The albums will also be available for download on Amazon, Zune, Napster, CD Baby and a host of others. The only place to receive physical copies of the CDs, however, is our online store.
We have been added to rotation on CBC Radio 3. Tune in and maybe you will hear us!
In other news, Matthew has been working on a solo album under the guise of Matthew J Thomson, and has finished the music. It hasn't been pressed yet, but you can listen to some of the songs on CBC Radio 3 and Myspace. I think the songs are so darn catchy, we may steal some of them and make them Open Fields songs.

The CD release show is this Sunday, April 25!
Since our EP Launch is a few days away (April 25 at Casa del Popolo), I thought I would share a bit of information about the album. It was recorded between January and August 2009 by Matthew in our old practise space in St. Henri and in our home studio (the basement in Danielle and Matthew's apartment!). Unlike our previous album, Love What You're Left With, which was a collection of songs written over the previous 4 years, the songs on You Gave Up The Ghost were written in the year leading up to the recording. There are a few b-sides that didn't make the cut. We haven't decided if we are going to release those online. There is also an extended version of Find An Old Song that has a longer outro, which we intend to pull out live.
The album art was designed by the talented Rob Rodgers, former member of Winnipeg's Papermoon, and former bandmate of Matthew and Justin. Fun fact: the song Mark My Word dates back to the year 2000 when all three played in a band together in high school! (Rob also designed our website!)
The albums themselves are painstakingly cut, folded, and glued by all four band members. We've done everything from wiping the CDs till they shine, to sealing them in little bags. We have perfected an assembly line and can pump out 25 cds in a 3 hour period that usually corresponds with watching the hockey game. These CDs are selling for $5 each and hopefully you will agree they are worth the care and the effort that went into them. :)
We are happy to have gotten a mini CD review in the Montreal Mirror this week! We are also happy that the Link at Concordia sort of likes the album.

Crackie is playing at the MoMA in New York!
The film, Crackie, directed by Sherry White, is playing at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC this month as part of their annual Canadian Front film exhibition. There is a screening on March 17 and March 20. If you are in the area (we sure would love to be), and you happen to take in the film, keep an ear out for the songs by Cherie Pyne and Open Fields' own Matthew Thomson. The songs were specially composed for the flim and are entitled Tender Steps and The Swallowed Time.

What's new with us?
Earlier this year, Matthew and Cherie Pyne teamed up to compose a few songs for the movie Crackie, directed by Sherry White. The movie is set in Newfoundland, stars Meghan Greely, Joel Hynes, and Mary Walsh, and also features music by Duane Andrews. It has been circulating the festival circuit these past few months. We were lucky enough to catch it here in Montreal at the Festival de Nouveau Cinema. If you are curious to hear how it sounded on the big screen, you can watch the trailer here... on a small screen.
UPDATE: Crackie has been included in the Toronto International Film Festival's list for Canada's Top Ten films!

Long-overdue update
The recording is in its final stagings. We're cutting, re-arranging and scrutinizing all of the songs. We hope to have the album finished, mastered, and pressed in about a month from now. It will be about 6 or 7 songs in total. We have yet to decide on a title.
In other news, we'd like to say congratulations to Ryan Reed, our bassist from yesteryear. Ryan Reed and Rebecca Smith were married on July 17, 2009 in Norway, their new country of residence. We wish we could've been there!

Recording Update!
We've finished pre-production and are sifting through the demos to see which songs will make the new album, which will likely be a 5-6 song EP. We're going to start the recording process soon. Hopefully, we'll have something available to show every in Spring.

We're recording again!
What have we been up to lately? We've been tucked away at our practise space all summer long, writing many new songs which we will unveil at our upcoming shows. We're so excited about them that we are going to record them over the winter. So you can expect a brand new EP in the spring. How exciting!
